Among these ornamental fruits, shades of red abound, but there is no shortage of pink, white, orange, or purple fruits. Species of the rose family ( Rosaceae ) also abound, and there is more than one of the heather family ( Ericaceae ). They are berries and other small ornamental fruits that, in addition, can become a source of food for birds in autumn and winter and, in some cases, can be used to make rich jams and other products or for medicinal purposes. They couldn’t be more useful (and beautiful).

1. Gaultheria mucronata (chaura)

Formerly included in the genus PernettyaGaultheria mucronata is a small evergreen shrub in Ericaceae, native to southern Argentina and Chile. In the volcanic areas of southern Chile, the chakra is one of the dominant plant species above the tree line.

It is frost-hardy and is grown for its glossy dark green leaves and attractive plum-shaped berries 6-9mm in diameter, which turns from white to pink and finally dark purple when ripe.

A small evergreen shrub of the Primulaceae family distributed from northeast India to Japan and the Philippines is a plant widely used at Christmas. It is usually grown as an indoor plant in cold climates, although it works well outdoors in gardens with warm temperatures free of solid frosts.
