Black Russian, White Russian, White Russian, Black Russian. Two elegant cocktails for this winter, which have little to do with mother Russia despite their name. The Russian comes from its alcoholic base: vodka. And it is already known that vodka always evokes Russian steps.

The recipe. We start with the Black Russian recipe or Black Russian in English. A straightforward cocktail, but quite forceful:

  • Cubers Classic Ice
  • 5 cl of vodka.
  • 2.5 cl of coffee liqueur ( Kahlua, Tia Maria, or homemade coffee liqueur)

Black Russian or Black Russian.

It is a short drink, and therefore the correct thing is to serve it in an old-fashioned glass (low and wide) with 2 or 3 ice stonesFirst, add the vodka, then the coffee liqueur, and stir with the cold drink. Taking the Black Russian as a base, we have many variations intended to lower the alcoholic content and make it less intense. We can also play with the 2:1 ratio of vodka and coffee liqueur and be more generous with the latter to the drinker’s taste.

If we serve it in a highball glass and add a touch of cola to soften the result, it is known as Tall Black Russian, Australian Black Russian, or Colorado Bulldog. If we use a Guinness beer instead of cola, then we have a smooth Russian Irish or Black Russian. With Ginger Ale, the brown Russian. The Black Russian also admits to pouring chocolate ice cream. When we substitute the coffee liqueur for cherry brandy, we have a Red Russian. And if we use peppermint, a Russian green.

But there is a variation of the Black Russian that is more popular than the rest, the White Russian or White Russian. It consists of adding cream or liquid cream to a Black Russian:

  • Cubers Classic Ice
  • 5 cl of vodka.
  • 2 cl of coffee liqueur
  • 3 cl of cream or liquid cream.

White Russian or White Russian.

The liquid cream has to be added last and must be carefully stirred to float to the top. It can be completed with a touch of nutmeg, and instead of cream, you can use milk or condensed milk if you have a sweet tooth. As in the case of the Black Russian, we have all kinds of variations.

We have Anna Kournikova, like the famous tennis player when the milk is skimmed. If we use horchata, it is called Mexican White Russian. We have a blind Russian ( Blind Russian, also known as Muddy Water or mud water). With goat’s milk, a white CubanCanadian white. With rum instead of vodka, Of course, it cannot be denied that fantasy reigns in the world of cocktails.

The tennis player Anna Kournikova with her husband Enrique Iglesias, with whom she has two children. The Anna Kournikova cocktail is a particular type of White Russian made with skimmed milk.

History of the Black Russian and the White Russian.

Although in principle, one might think that the white Russian is the evolution of the black, the truth is that it is not very clear which came first. It is considered that the custom of mixing coffee liqueur with vodka originates from Portugal, and from there, it spreads throughout Europe. (Although it may all come from Galicia, what an excellent homemade coffee liqueur they have in those lands).

In any case, the official origin of these cocktails is the year 1949, so they are relatively recent. Gustave Tops, the head bartender at the Metropol hotel in Brussels, prepares an elegant and sophisticated cocktail to entertain his client Perle Mesta, the US ambassador to Luxembourg. Doña Perle had loads of money and was famous for throwing big society parties. If it was served with milk, it was a White Russian; no milk, black Russian, and so on.

In the history of the White Russian, we cannot forget the cinema and its influence. In 1998 we met El Nota (the Dude), the movie The Big Lebowski by the Coen brothers. The satisfaction with which El Nota drank countless White Russians indeed helped popularize this cocktail. It also appears humorously in Catwoman, where the protagonist asks for a special White Russian without vodka or coffee liqueur. With a lot of glamour, we ask that they give him milk, something very typical of cats.

We have shown you what a white Russian, a Black Russian, and many Russians of other colors and flavors consist of. All you have to do is encourage yourself to experiment and find the combination you like the most.

None of them is as such, originally from Russia;  They get their name because both have vodka as their main base and perhaps also because one of their main ingredients is cold. They are relatively young – it was in Belgium in 1949 when, thanks to the barman of the Hotel Métropole, the combination of this liquor and coffee saw the triumphant light.

Preparing it does not imply any significant complication: with 50 milliliters of vodka for every 20 of coffee liqueur and a lot of ice, a unique preparation with a very particular flavor is achieved.

The base is the traditional Black for a White Russian, and only approximately 30 milliliters of evaporated milk is added. In this case, the taste is smoother, but this is not to be trusted: the vodka is still there, along with all its effects.

Some variations have emerged, from playing with the amounts of one liquid and another, such as incorporating chocolate ice cream into the mixture to add new flavor notes. Whatever your favorite version, the important thing is to enjoy it to the fullest!
