  • Two tablespoons table salt

I love green bean casserole and make it for Easter, Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Wednesday dinner. During potlucks or holiday parties, it’s just as important to have a classic green bean casserole recipe on the table as Deviled Eggs or mashed potatoes. It’s a staple around here!

The great thing about French Green Bean Casserole is that it can be made ahead and reheated or made ahead and cooked before serving! This recipe requires almost no prep, making it the easiest side dish ever!

Ingredients in Green Bean Casserole

Green Beans – Green bean casserole starts with green beans (of course), and you can use fresh, frozen, or canned for this recipe. Canned will provide a smoother hash, while fresh or frozen has a bit more texture (and needs more salt added to the recipe). Whether new or frozen, cook beans until crisp-tender, about 5 minutes for the firm and 8 minutes for fresh. You can skip the boil on frozen green beans, but I prefer the texture if cooked a bit first.

Mushroom Chowder: Campbell’s Green Bean Casserole has been a staple on every holiday table for as long as I can remember. The addition of the mushroom soup makes this recipe so easy (and is the base of the delicious sauce). If you can’t eat mushrooms, any “cream of” soup will work just fine in this recipe!

Crispy Onions – Crispy fried onions are essential to this dish (so much so that it’s even sometimes referred to as French Green Bean Casserole)! If you’ve never eaten them, these onions are delicious and delicious in all kinds of stews, burgers, and more! So much was added to this casserole!

Cheddar Cheese is optional but adds so much to this dish, and we love adding cheese! Sharp cheddar cheese has more flavor!

How to make a green bean casserole

There’s a reason this dish has been around for years; it’s simple. It’s delicious. Perfect in every way.

  1. Combine mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, and pepper (per the recipe below).
  2. Toss with defrosted green beans, some crispy onions, and cheese.
  3. Top with crispier onions and bake until golden brown and bubbly!

To get ahead of time.

This dish can be prepared up to 48 hours in advance. Prepare as directed, except leave the crispy onion topping in a separate container, so they don’t get soggy. I usually place them in a sealed sandwich bag right on the plate and sprinkle them before baking.

Remove dish from the refrigerator at least 30 minutes before baking. If it’s freezing, you may need to add up to 10 minutes of additional cooking time.

If you’re going to someone else’s house for dinner, do everything except the last 10 minutes of baking and take it with you covered in foil! Top with crispy onions and bake until hot and bubbly!

How long to cook green bean casserole

Green Bean Casserole only takes about 40 minutes, and only 5 are prep. You can make Green Bean Casserole up to a day in advance and store them in the fridge until you bake them, saving you precious time the rest of the way. I was preparing dinner. Keep in mind that if your green bean casserole has been in the fridge, you may need to add some extra time!

While I sometimes take the time to make a fresh green bean casserole from scratch, I have to admit this recipe takes me back to childhood. I love the flavors and the simplicity!
