Shrimp and Grits is a traditional dish that hails from coastal South Carolina and Georgia. My Creole Shrimp and Grits go a little further south than Louisiana. Served with lots of plump, juicy prawns topped with a well-seasoned, lightly spiced sauce, with fresh tomatoes and corn poured over cheesy grits. Southern comfort food with a friendly, new twist.

Ever wonder what the difference is between Creole and Cajun? Well, I did, and after reading the terms, it all boils down to this.

Cajun is a word used to describe the French settlers who moved from the Acadia region of Canada to Louisiana after the British conquest of Acadia (known today as New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia) in the 16th century. XVIII.

Creole is a term used to describe the people born to these new settlers in French colonial Louisiana, especially New Orleans.

Creole Seasoning Spice Mix.

BUT, back to this dish…I opted to sort my shrimp and grits with a handful of fresh tomatoes and corn that I had on hand.

I add cheddar cheese and creamed corn for the grits to increase their flavor and texture. I love the cheesy flavor, and the bits and pieces of corn from the cream corn add so much to the delicious grits.

It bears repeating that this is a well-seasoned sauce, not a spicy one. While it does have a bit of heat, the flavors come together to make this a memorable dish.

The sauce uses a mixture of Creole standards spices, and to keep it easy, you can use Tony Chachere’s Ready-Made Creole Seasoning, which can be found in most supermarkets in the spice aisle. It’s made from a mixture of paprika, garlic, and onion powders, with cayenne pepper and thyme, to name a few ingredients. I also added smoked paprika for the sauce. Add a charming touch. INGREDIENTS

  • 1 lb large raw shrimp peeled and deveined
  • 1 tsp Creole Seasoning like mine
  • < span class = “warm-recipe-ingredients-amount”> 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 5 < span class = “warm-recipe-component-name”> minced garlic cloves
  • 1 1/2 cups grape tomatoes, halved
  • one tsp celery salt
  • 1/2 cup sliced ​​green onions
  • 1/4 cup white wine broth or chicken broth
  • 8 oz. corn kernels
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp water
  • chopped parsley to garnish

SEMOLINA

  • < li class = “wprm-recipe-ingredients” style = “list-style-type: disc;”> 4 cups stock or water
  • 1 tbsp kosher salt
  • 1 cup grits
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese shredded
  • 8 oz cream of corn

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Add 1 cup of grits to 4 cups of highly salted chicken broth or water and bring to a boil. Reduce to a minimum and simmer for 30 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking. Remove from heat and add the cheese and cream of corn. Stir to mix well and cover. Set aside.
  • Combine shrimp, Creole seasoning, paprika, and pepper in a bowl and toss to coat. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the oil and butter and cook until the butter melts. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute. Add shrimp and cook, without stirring, for 1 minute. Add the tomatoes, celery salt, and green onions. Cook, occasionally stirring, 3 minutes. Degreased pan with wine; Cook, stirring, and scrape the pan to loosen any brown bits, 30 seconds. Add the corn kernels and stir.
  • Remove shrimp from skillet and set aside. Mix cornstarch and water and add to the pan. Stir over medium heat until thick. Add shrimp back to the skillet, tossing to coat.
  • Spoon shrimp mixture over creamed corn, cheese, grits. Sprinkle with parsley and serve.
