Characteristics of the pear tree

The Pyrus communis or pear tree is deciduous, relatively straight, and somewhat slow. The pear tree can reach between 10 and 15 meters in height, and its approximate lifespan could be up to 100 years.

Its glass has a pyramidal appearance, which in its youth is rounded and later acquires an oval shape. The trunk of the pear tree is thick and tall, with a perimeter between 0.5 and 1.5 meters.

Its branches are strong, spiny, and generally arched, forming an angle of approximately 45 degrees with the trunk. Its bark is smooth, greenish, or reddish when young, turning brown-dark and longitudinal striations in adulthood.

The leaves are ovate or rounded, slightly shiny on the upper side, and have a petiole of the same length as the blade or shorter; initially, they have hairs, but eventually, they become hairless. The margin of the leaves is slightly serrated.

The pear tree has abundant white flowers (although, on some occasions, they are pink), which generally require a pollinator and are hermaphroditic. They can appear solitary or grouped in a corymb composed of between 9 and 11 flowers.

The flower of the pear tree has a calyx that contains five persistent sepals; its corolla is dialipetala, the petals are nail-shaped, suborbicular to oblong and wide; stamens between 20 and 30, in groups according to their filaments by five and by ten; the anthers are red or purple. 

It has an inferior ovary consisting of five cells. Each of these cells has two enclosed ovules. It is a tree whose harvest occurs in autumn, and its fruit is obtained in a period between 5 and 8 years.

Pear cultivation and care

The pear tree requires between 600 and 1000 hours of cold and adapts well to dry and warm places and the low and medium mountains. 

It has some tolerance to wet soils. It can flower at a temperature of 7º C and is resistant to temperatures ranging from -18º C to -20º C and down to -40º C incomplete winter rest. 

The pear tree adapts more to the cold than to the heat; this is why in Europe, its cultivation extends to 55 degrees latitude and rises to 1200 m. of altitude. Humidity and abundant dew during flowering do not favor it; on the contrary, they are harmful.

The pear tree grows well in soil containing approximately equal silica, lime, and clay. Its cultivation is successful in siliceous earth but not dry, clayey, and poorly drained limestone soils.

In late winter or early spring, the pear tree is pruned to remove unwanted branches and give it a better shape. 

 From the outset, the tree is recommended to be given a more open than closed shape to reduce its height and encourage its lateral expansion to regulate the sap currents and promote production.

Pear varieties

Smooth skin that is not very shiny, greenish-yellow, and pinkish or streaked with a carmine red, with abundant dots. White meat, juicy, sweet, slightly acidulated, and aromatic. It keeps well in the refrigerator. It is collected in September.

Bartlett: It is bell-shaped, with a bright yellow ripening color. The pulp is fleshy, white, and very soft. It is ideal for making preserves or as fresh fruit.

Anjou is shaped like an egg; the skin is soft and green, even when it is ripe. It has a lot of juice and a sweet taste. It resists transport well and is ideal as fresh fruit.

Bosc: it has a symmetrical body, an elongated neck, brown skin, and is very aromatic. Due to its meatiness, it is the most used for cooking.

Comice: it has a rounded shape, green and somewhat reddish. It is the sweetest and juiciest variety of all pears.

Blanca de Aranjuez (Blanquilla): this fruit has a regular size and is smooth, thin, shiny, and has greenish skin. White meat is very juicy and pleasant, with a tiny heart. It withstands low temperatures and is harvested in August and September.

Conference: stands out for its excellent taste quality, good cold storage, and superior resistance to handling.
